How Moms Can Get Back on Track After the Holidays
The holidays are a magical time filled with joy, family, and plenty of treats. But as the decorations come down, we feel tired and lost. Many moms find themselves feeling off-track with their fitness and wellness habits. The good news? You don’t need a crash diet or extreme workout plan to reset. Here are five simple, effective steps to help you ease back into your routine and feel your best—even with the chaos of mom life.
1. Show Yourself Grace
The first step in getting back on track is to be kind to yourself. Let go of any guilt about what you did or didn’t do over the holidays. Skipping workouts or indulging in festive meals doesn’t erase your progress. Life as a mom is about getting things done, and the holidays are meant to be enjoyed. Shift your focus from self-criticism to self-compassion. Celebrate the moments you cherished, and remind yourself that it’s never too late to start fresh.
Deep breath, mama. It’s ok to start from where you are at this very moment.
2. Rebuild Healthy Habits Gradually
Trying to overhaul your life overnight is overwhelming and unsustainable, especially when you’re managing a household. Instead, start small by reintroducing a few key habits. Begin by drinking more water, prepping a couple of healthy meals, or committing to a short daily walk with the stroller. These small wins add up over time and help you rebuild confidence in your routine. Think of it as laying a strong foundation for long-term success.
BTW- if you’re feeling done with treats, its ok to pass them off or scrap them entirely. Don’t force yourself to eat something just because it’s there!
3. Set Realistic Goals and Plan Ahead
Take a moment to revisit your fitness goals and ensure they align with your current season of motherhood. Are they specific, measurable, and achievable? If they feel too big, break them down into smaller, actionable steps. For example, instead of “workout every day,” aim to move your body three times a week. Once you’ve set your goals, create a plan to make them happen. Use a calendar, planner, or app to schedule workouts, meal prep, and me-time. Having a plan helps you stay organized and eliminates decision fatigue—something every mom can relate to.
4. Focus on Movement and Nourishment
After weeks of holiday indulgence, your body might be craving movement and nutrient-dense foods. Start by incorporating gentle activities like walking, yoga, or low-impact strength training to ease back into exercise. If you’re chasing little ones, consider turning playtime into movement—dance parties or park outings can double as workouts! On the nutrition front, aim for better choices, not a complete overhaul. Stay hydrated, and choose more fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. You don’t need to cut out your favorite treats entirely—just aim for single servings and listen to your body’s cues.
5. Build Accountability and Celebrate Progress
Getting back on track is often easier with support. Investing in accountability will keep you motivated. Whether it’s a fitness class, an online program or a personal trainer, accountability can make a big difference. Celebrate your progress along the way, no matter how small. Did you prep healthy meals this week? Make it to a class? These milestones are worth acknowledging because they show that you’re taking steps toward your goals. Remember, consistency matters more than perfection, and every bit of effort counts.
